Nazareth- a place of pilgrimage in the Holy Land

In the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth in the Holy Land the inscription ‘Verbum caro hic factum est’ (Here the Word became flesh) is a reminder that it was here that God assumed a human form in the Virgin Mary’s womb. Joseph also settles in Nazareth in the Holy Land again with Mary and Jesus after their return from Egypt. Jesus grows up here in Nazareth in the Holy Land and lives a simple, quiet life until he starts his public ministry. Nazareth in the Holy Land is the place where the Incarnation of God occurred, a place central to Christian daily life and as such it has a profound message for Christianity. The great Basilica of the Annunciation of Nazareth in the Holy Land, built upon the site of Mary’s home, bears witness to this.

“In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin. The angel came to her and said “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. You will conceive a child and give birth to a son. You are to name him Jesus.” (cf Luke 1 : 26 – 32)

Nazareth is the place in the Holy Land where the Incarnation of God occurred, a place central to Christian daily life and it has a profound message for our times.

The growing stream of pilgrims to the Holy Land and particularly to Nazareth means that this important Christian shrine is being adapted to meet modern-day demands.

Easy access to the Basilica of Nazareth for disabled people is to be created with the help of charitable donations. In addition, the area around the Basilica of Nazareth is to be improved in such a way that the ever-growing stream of pilgrims can be better managed and so that processions and prayer-times can take place outside the Basilica of Nazareth in the Holy Land as well.

These measures are meant to prepare this important Christian shrine for modern-day demands.
