Jaffa Terra Santa High School: Two of our pupils are a credit to themselves/us

Two pupils from class X of the Terra Santa High School in Jaffa will this year follow the programme of courses offered by the University of Tel Aviv to high school pupils who have distinguished themselves in their studies.

They will therefore be able to take part from these final years of high school in the courses of the University of Tel Aviv, and their effort will be assessed as a credit if, at the end of their studies (taking the Bagrut or high school-leaving examination) they continue their studies at the University of Tel Aviv or other Israeli academic institutions. In this way the university tries to attract young intellectual talents from high schools to university, ensuring their future presence in their institution. Quite rightly the invitation was open to all Israeli schools, Arabic and Hebrew, state schools and private schools. Five hundred pupils applied and took the entrance exam. Rami Watad and Iman Khon took part from the Terra Santa High School in Jaffa. Of the 500 young people, only 40 passed the exam, including our two pupils. It is an honour for them and an honour for our School.

I thank the Lord for this success, but also the students and the teachers of the Terra Santa High School which with constancy and without sparing any effort play such an important role in the field of education. It is a sign that when we do things seriously and sow with generosity, the fruits are sure to come.

For us, Franciscans of the Custody, it is a further incentive to work our way, with motivations that are completely Franciscan, in such an important sector of Israeli society as education, especially here in Jaffa, where Arabs and Jews have lived together for decades beside each other. Our historical presence in the schools, in implementing the syllabuses of the Ministry of Education, underlines the commitment we have in education to mutual knowledge, respect and sincere dialogue, to encourage a path towards peace and the full collaboration between peoples in this difficult region of the world.
