Academic Year Inaugural Mass

For the second consecutive year, the beginning of the current (2006-2007) academic year brought together the students of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF) and those of the Studium Theologicum Salesianum of Jerusalem for a Mass to open the year in the Franciscan’s Saint Saviour’s Church. The celebration was a solemn invocation of the Holy Spirit upon the professors and students of the two institutions. In his homily, Father Gianmaria Gianazza, director of the Salesian Inspectorate of the Middle East, began with John Paul II’s apostolic exhortation Pastores dabo vobis, underlining the responsibility of both professors and students for successful formation. Inspired by certain Arab-Christian authors of the Middle Ages, he recalled the importance of philosophical and theological study to give substance to the experience of faith.

Present at the Mass were the academic authorities of both faculties: Father Bottini ofm and Father Chrupcala ofm, respectively Dean of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum and Moderator of the Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum; Fathers F. Preston sdb and R. Spataro sdb, representing the Studium Theologicum Salesianum, as well as the Custos of the Holy Land and a large number of professors and students. Liturgical animation was assured by the Franciscan students of Saint Saviour’s; the singing, by the Salesian students of Ratisbonne.

Following the celebration, all present were the guests of the SBF dean for greetings in Mary Immaculate Hall of Saint Saviour’s convent. Following fraternal refreshments, the students proceeded to the election of new student representatives for the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum and the Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum.
