Custody Celebrates 700th Anniversary of the Death of Duns Scot

9th November 2008

Initiated by the Studium Biblicum, the festivities for the beginning of the academic year have taken place. Every year, this formal inauguration of the year takes place on the Feast of Blessed Duns Scot. The festivities took on a more solemn character in this year 2008 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death.

On the morning of Saturday, November 8, the auditorium of Saint Saviour’s was filled with Franciscan friars, Capuchins, and other religious brothers and sisters to hear the day’s three conferences:
The masterly one by Paolo Martinelli OFM Cap on Saint Francis and Faith: The Actuality of One Christian Experience. That of Jose Carballo OFM, Minister General of the Order, The Word of God Today in the Light of the Thought of Blessed John Duns Scot (1266-1308). That of Frederic Manns OFM, Echoes of the Synod on the Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church.

The next day, Sunday, November 9th, the Solemn Mass took place with the Minister General, Jose Carballo OFM, presiding, assisted by the Custos of the Holy Land, Pierbattista Pizzaballa; the Custodial Vicar, Artemio Vitores; and the Provincial of the Saint Hedwig Province of Poland, Brother Waclaw Stanislaw The numbers of the friars of the Custody who were present, instructors and students of the SBF, Franciscan seminarians, were augmented by the presence of 48 Polish Franciscan friars, on pilgrimage with their Provincial and guided by Brother Eleazar Wronski, their countryman from the same province, who is in the service of the Custody. So there were about a hundred priests concelebrating the Eucharist.

In his homily, the Minister General recalled that Duns Scot was able through study to nourish the dialogue between knowledge and devotion, contemplation and study, science and charity. For this reason he is still a teacher and a guide for the Franciscans and beyond the Order today.
The presence of the Polish friars from Saint Hedwig Province was the occasion for the Custos of the Holy Land to bestow the Pilgrim’s Medal on their provincial, Brother Waclaw Stanislaw Chomik. He also addressed them after the meal, presenting to them the realities of the Custody.
There are presently 22 Polish Franciscan friars in the Holy Land, four of whom are attached to the Saint Hedwig Province.
