Good Friday 2009 in Jerusalem: The Cross as a Source of Joy

During the Passion service held on Golgotha, during the Stations of the Cross walk down the Via Dolorosa in the footsteps of Christ, during the Funeral of Christ at the Holy Sepulchre, Christians were inspired through the liturgy of the Church to revere the mysterious humiliation of God, and His saving humility.

Some news broadcasters across the world conveyed a gory image of the Good Friday celebrations in Jerusalem, as with virtually everything else reported about the city. In doing so, these broadcasters have once again failed to see the forest for the trees, and they have once again missed the splendor of the Christian faith.

The Cross, which is celebrated throughout the day on Good Friday, is a source of joy for Christians. It was on the cross that Christ saved the world, so Christians revere it.

There is nothing mortifying about it. It is a celebration of a grain of wheat that has fallen to the earth and died, only to rise from the dead and live forever.

It’s a mystery that will be more intensely celebrated on Easter Sunday. Until then, let us contemplate it so that we, too, can be reborn.
