After the festivals of Saint Anthony, the Custody’s patron saint, the Franciscans concluded the week with a thanksgiving mass for the Jubilees of certain friars.
Celebrated by the Custos, this Eucharist gathered 23 friars (not all were present) who had a special anniversary to celebrate, both for the anniversaries of priesthood and religious life.
As usual, this kind of celebration allows us to reflect on the loyalty of these men in their commitment to following Christ.
The youngest friars celebrated 25 years of religious life or priesthood, and the older ones were celebrating their 65th or even 75th anniversaries! It was an uplifting testimony in a part of the world where being a Christian can sometimes require being heroic.
As Fr. Niccacci (who is celebrating his 50 years of priesthood) recalled during his homily, the Jubilee mass resonates in a special way during the year for Consecrated Life declared by Pope Francis.
“We are gathered today around the table of the Word and of the Eucharist in order to thank the Father who calls us to follow Jesus by fully adhering to his Gospel.We also thank him for having poured out the Holy Spirit into our hearts, who gives us joy and who allows us to witness to the world about his love and mercy,” he added.
After this festive celebration, the Friars Minor can now look forward to June 29, when several Franciscans will receive the sacrament of holy orders, as deacons or priests.
These friars can rest assured that their older brothers will benevolently watch over their mission, strengthened by many years in the service of Christ and of the Church.
