Opening of the school year for Catholic universities

On Monday, October 6, at the church of St. Savior in Jerusalem, mass was celebrated for the opening of the academic year of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, the Studium Theologicum Hierosolymitanum and the Studium Theologicum Salesianum.

Pier Giorgio Gianazza, Vice Provincial of the Salesians for the Province of the Middle East, presided over the celebration. Professors, students and staff of the three institutions of higher learning linked to the Franciscans and the Salesians participated.

In his homily, Fr. Gianazza took the words of Pope Francis, who in the celebration at Saint Martha’s on September 2 said: “You can have five degrees in theology, but not have the Spirit of God! What gives authority and identity is the Holy Spirit, the anointing of the Holy Spirit.”

The mass that took place was that of the Holy Spirit, remembering the words of Jesus: “The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things.”

Fr. PIER GIORGIO GIANAZZA, sdb
Vice Provincial, Province of the Middle East
“We hope that this year we will be guided by the light of the Holy Spirit, because he is the master of theology. He was the one who infused in Jesus with wisdom, grace as he grew in stature and age. We too must grow in this theology, in grace and in wisdom as dictated the Spirit.”

Brother MASSIMO PAZZINI, ofm
Deacon Studium Biblicum Franciscanum
“We hope that these good wishes are become a reality and that they can lead us to a fruitful academic year. We should note that for the first time this year the inaugural mass was presided over by a Salesian priest, who is a local authority, the Vice Provincial for the Middle East, and he represents our employees here in the Salesian schools. He is also important for yet another reason: Don Gianazza has always worked and studied topics that are dear to us and that we deal with: Arabic Christian literature from the Middle Ages onward.”
