Carissime sorelle, carissimi fratelli,
il Signore vi dia pace!
1. “Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli e in terra pace agli uomini che Dio ama”. È questo il canto degli angeli, che è risuonato al Campo dei Pastori la notte del primo Natale, quando Maria diede alla luce il bambino Gesù. È un semplice ritornello. Anche noi l’abbiamo cantato in questa notte e continueremo a cantarlo in tutto il tempo di Natale e per buona parte dell’anno liturgico.
Dentro questo semplice ritornello è contenuta una costatazione, una profezia e una proposta.
2. Anzitutto una costatazione: la grandezza, la maestà, lo splendore di Dio, la sua gloria risplende nell’alto dei cieli, cioè non dipende da noi! Dio risplende nella sua grandezza, nella sua bellezza e nella sua luce indipendentemente dal fatto che noi lo riconosciamo e lo accogliamo. Al tempo stesso, questo semplice ritornello contiene la costatazione che tutti noi, in quanto persone umane siamo amati da Dio. Anzi, potremmo spingerci oltre e dire che la gloria di Dio risplende proprio nel suo amarci gratuitamente. E il suo amore per noi si manifesta concretamente nel Bambino Gesù, che ci viene donato come un figlio e che ci viene inviato come nostra salvatore.
3. In secondo luogo questo ritornello: “Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli e in terra pace agli uomini che Dio ama”, contiene una profezia. Ci sarà pace sulla terra, nel momento in cui ci lasceremo amare da Dio attraverso il suo Figlio Gesù. Il fondamento della pace non sono gli sforzi degli uomini, neanche dei più potenti di questo mondo. Il fondamento della pace è il fatto che Dio ci ama e ci manifesta questo suo amore in modo pieno proprio nel suo Figlio Gesù. La profondità di questo amore noi non la comprendiamo il giorno di Natale, la comprenderemo il Venerdì Santo quando vedremo quel bambino, ormai divenuto uomo, morire innocente, morire perdonando, morire amando.
4. Infine nel ritornello “Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli e in terra pace agli uomini che Dio ama”, c’è anche una proposta: è la proposta di mettere Dio al primo posto, al di sopra di tutto, ma al tempo stesso ad accoglierlo su questa terra accogliendo il Suo Figlio che si manifesta nella fragile realtà di un bambino bisognoso di tutto, a lasciarci amare da Lui che fin dal suo primo istante di vita terrena è un dono per noi.
Perché ci sia pace sulla terra occorre che noi riconosciamo a Dio la gloria che gli spetta, occorre cioè che la smettiamo di volerci mettere al Suo posto o di volerlo sostituire con i vari idoli che ogni epoca e ogni cultura ci propone.
5. Che questo ritornello: “Gloria a Dio nell’alto dei cieli e in terra pace agli uomini che Dio ama”, ci accompagni in questi giorni e ci aiuti ad accogliere il sogno di pace che Dio ha per tutta l’umanità a partire da questa terra in cui Lui ci ha chiamati a vivere e che ha un grande bisogno di pace.
Che il sogno e la profezia di pace cantata dagli angeli la notte di Natale, si possa realizzare in ogni angolo del mondo dove ancora regna l’odio e la violenza.
Che il sogno e la profezia di pace possa realizzarsi dentro le nostre famiglie e nella vita di ognuno di noi.

Glory to God and peace to men
Dear sisters and brothers,
The Lord give you peace!
1. “Glory to God in the highest heavens, and on earth peace for those he favours, for those He loves”. This was the song of the angels, which echoed in the Shepherds Field on that first Christmas night, when Mary gave birth to the child Jesus. It is a simple refrain. We have also sung these words during this night, and we will continue to sing them throughout the Christmas season and in the major part of the liturgical year. Within this simple refrain is contained an assurance, a prophecy and a proposal.
2. First of all it is an assurance: the greatness, the majesty, the splendour of God, and his glory shine in the highest of heavens, and therefore all this does not depend from us! God shines in his greatness, in his beauty and in his light independently from the fact that we know him or welcome him. At the same time, this simple refrain contains an assurance for all of us, as human persons loved by God. We can even go further and say that the glory of God shines precisely in the fact that he loves us through no merit of our own. His love for us manifests itself concretely in the Child Jesus, who is given to us as a son and whop is sent to us as our Saviour.
3. Secondly, this refrain: “Glory to God in the highest heavens, and on earth peace for those he favours”, contains a prophecy. There will be peace on earth, in the moment when we let ourselves be loved by God through his Son Jesus. The foundations of peace are not those placed by the efforts of men, even if they can be the most powerful men in this world. The foundations for peace consist in the fact that God loves us and manifests his love to us fully precisely in his Son Jesus. We can understand the depth of this love on Christmas day, and we also understand it on Good Friday when we see that child, who grew up to become a man, dying innocently, dying forgiving all, and dying loving all.
4. Finally the refrain “Glory to God in the highest heavens, and on earth peace to those he favours”, is also a proposal: it is the proposal to place God in the first place, above all else, but at the same time to welcome God on this earth by welcoming His Son who manifests himself to us in the fragile reality of a child who is in need of everything, in order that we let ourselves be loved by Him who has given himself to us as gift from the very first moment of his life.
In order that there may be peace on earth, it is necessary that we recognise to God the glory that belongs to him, it is important that we stop placing ourselves in His place, or wanting to substitute him with the various idols and false gods that each historical time and each culture proposes to us.
5. May this refrain: “Glory to God in the highest heavens, and on earth peace for those he favours”, accompany us during these days and help us to welcome and accept the dream of peace that God has for all humanity, starting from this land in which He has called us to live and which is so much in need of peace.
May the dream and prophecy of peace that the angels sang on the night of Christmas become a reality in every corner of the world where hatred and violence still reign.
May the dream and prophecy of peace become a reality in our families and in the life of each and every one of us.
