1. Introduzione e saluto
Santità, Beatitudini, Eccellenze, Autorità religiose e civili, distinte personalità convenute in questa occasione, fratelli della comunità greca, armena e francescana, responsabili e membri di tutte le comunità cristiane e di tutte le comunità di credenti che vivono in Gerusalemme, religiose e religiosi, signore e signori, fratelli e sorelle, cari amici permettetemi di rivolgermi a voi con il saluto caro a san Francesco: “Il Signore vi dia pace!”.
È un onore e una gioia poter essere qui insieme a voi, tutti attorno all’Edicola del Santo Sepolcro, per celebrare il completamento dei lavori di conservazione, restauro e riabilitazione della stessa.
Rispettando i tempi stabiliti, i lavori sono stati portati a compimento in modo tale da poter permettere la completa riapertura dell’Edicola prima della Pasqua di quest’anno, che per una felice e provvidenziale coincidenza vede le nostre comunità cristiane di Oriente e di Occidente celebrare la Risurrezione di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo nella stessa data.
2. Il luogo centrale della nostra fede
Permettetemi di aggiungere qualche parola per sottolineare il valore spirituale di questi lavori rispetto alla pur necessaria opera di conservazione, restauro e riabilitazione dell’Edicola.
È stato un intervento di restauro sul luogo in assoluto più importante per tutta la Cristianità, quello che per noi è il luogo chiave per interpretare la nostra vita e la nostra storia.
Il luogo fisico che conserva la memoria della sepoltura del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo ci testimonia che l’incarnazione del Figlio di Dio è talmente reale e completa, da arrivare fino all’esperienza della morte, che è l’esperienza finale di ogni esistenza umana.
Ma il santo Sepolcro è soprattutto il luogo fisico dove il corpo del nostro Salvatore non ha visto la corruzione e la morte è stata vinta. Il sepolcro vuoto è il testimone silenzioso ed eloquente di questo evento. Il sepolcro vuoto è il luogo dove anche fisicamente è iniziata una nuova creazione, un mondo nuovo nell’istante di luce in cui Gesù è risorto.
Proprio perché questo è il luogo della risurrezione del Signore Gesù è anche alla base della nostra fede e della nostra speranza cristiana.
È in questo luogo che a Maria di Magdala, Maria di Giacomo e Salome viene detto, il mattino di Pasqua: «Non abbiate paura! Voi cercate Gesù Nazareno, il crocifisso. È risorto, non è qui. Ecco il luogo dove l'avevano posto. Ma andate, dite ai suoi discepoli e a Pietro: Egli vi precede in Galilea. Là lo vedrete, come vi ha detto» (Mc 16,6-7).
3. Il valore simbolico supplementare
Permettetemi di dire che l’aver potuto realizzare i lavori di conservazione, restauro e riabilitazione dell’Edicola del Santo Sepolcro grazie alla collaborazione delle nostre tre comunità ha anche un valore ulteriore: è il segno di una importante crescita di relazioni fraterne tra di noi e tra le nostre comunità, all’insegna della fiducia reciproca e della collaborazione.
Sia lode perciò a nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, per noi morto e sepolto secondo le Scritture e per noi risorto da morte qui il terzo giorno, che attorno al suo Santo Sepolcro ci ha fatto ritrovare più vicini, più pronti a cooperare, più disponibili gli uni verso gli altri, come veri fratelli.
4. Conclusione
Desidero concludere ringraziando tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile il restauro dell’Edicola del Santo Sepolcro: le autorità delle tre Comunità che hanno preso l’iniziativa e hanno saputo mettere in atto la realizzazione (Sua Beatitudine Teofilos, Sua Beatitudine Nourhan, Sua Eccellenza Mons. Pizzaballa). I fratelli delle tre Comunità che vivono all’interno del S. Sepolcro che, nonostante i disagi causati dai lavori hanno potuto trovare le soluzioni necessarie per eseguire il servizio liturgico e quello ai pellegrini. I membri delle altre comunità cristiane che condividono con noi questo luogo per la preghiera. Coloro che hanno contribuito a realizzare materialmente il progetto sotto la direzione della Professoressa Moropoulou: professionisti, architetti, ingegneri e avvocati secondo il loro contributo.
Tutti coloro che hanno reso possibile il restauro attraverso il loro contributo economico.
E il nostro ringraziamento e la nostra riconoscenza vada soprattutto al Signore Dio Onnipotente, Padre e Figlio e Spirito Santo, Colui che ispira e porta a compimento ogni opera buona.
Cristo è risorto, è veramente risorto! Qui. Amen.

For the completion of the work of conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the Ædicule of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
1. Introduction and greeting
Your Holiness, Your Beatitudes, Your Excellencies, religious and civil authorities, distinguished guests gathered here on this occasion, brothers of the Greek, Armenian and Franciscan Communities, Heads and members of all Christian Communities and of all Communities of Believers living in Jerusalem, Religious Women and Men, Ladies and Gentlemen, brothers and sisters, dear friends, allow me to address you with the greeting dear to Saint Francis: "May the Lord give you peace!"
It is an honour and a joy to be here with you all around the Ædicule of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate the completion of the work of its conservation, restoration and rehabilitation. Respecting the agreed time frame, the work has been carried out in such a way as to allow the full reopening of the Ædicule before Easter this year, which, by a happy and providential coincidence sees our Eastern and Western Christian Communities celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on the same date.
2. The central place of our faith
Allow me to add a few words to emphasize the spiritual value of these works beyond the sheer physical necessity for the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the Ædicule. It has been a restoration of the most important site for all of Christianity, the key place for us to interpret our life and our history.
The physical place that preserves the memory of the burial of our Lord Jesus Christ and testifies that the incarnation of the Son of God is so real and complete that it arrives at the experience of death, which is the ultimate experience of any human existence. But the Holy Sepulchre is above all the physical location where the body of our Saviour did not see corruption and death was defeated. The empty tomb is the silent and eloquent witness to this event. The empty tomb is the place where even physically a new creation began, a new world at the instant of light in which Jesus is risen.
Precisely because this is the place of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus it is also the basis of our faith and our Christian hope.
It is here that on Easter morning Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome are told: "Be not afraid! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. But go, tell to his disciples and to Peter, He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him, as he said unto you."(Mk.16.6-7).
3. The additional symbolic value
Let me say that to have carried out the work of conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the Ædicule of the Holy Sepulchre with the collaboration of our three Communities also has an additional value: it is the sign of a significant increase in fraternal relations between us and between our Communities, in an atmosphere of mutual trust and cooperation. Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us according to the Scriptures and is risen here for us from the dead on the third day, who, around His Holy Sepulchre has made us regain a greater closeness, more ready to cooperate and more available towards each other as true brothers.
4. Conclusion
I would like to conclude by thanking all those who made possible the restoration of the Ædicule of the Holy Sepulchre: the authorities of the three Communities that have taken the initiative and have been able to implement its realization – His Beatitude Theofilos, His Beatitude Nourhan, and His Grace Archbishop Pizzaballa. The brothers of the three Communities that live inside the Holy Sepulchre who, despite the discomfort caused by the work were able to find the solutions needed to perform the liturgical services and those of the pilgrims. The member of the other Christian Communities who share this place with us for worship. Those contributors who, directed by Professor Moropoulou, brought about the material realization of the project: professionals, architects, engineers and lawyers, each according to their contribution. All those who, through their economic contribution made the renovation possible. And our thanks and our gratitude go especially to the Lord God Almighty, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who inspires and fulfills every good work.
