1. Carissime sorelle, carissimi fratelli,
il Signore vi dia Pace!
Siamo nel luogo in cui Gesù risorto è apparso ai discepoli la sera stessa della Pasqua. In quella occasione il Risorto, alitando sui discepoli ha fatto loro dono dello Spirito Santo, e con lo Spirito ha donato loro la pace e la capacità di riconciliare le persone attraverso il perdono dei peccati.
Cinquanta giorni dopo, mentre i discepoli erano qui riuniti in preghiera assieme a Maria, di nuovo è disceso su di loro il dono dello Spirito Santo, come compimento della Pasqua. Questa volta il dono ricevuto li ha resi coraggiosi, capaci di annunciare la morte e risurrezione di Gesù, li ha resi capaci di parlare in modo comprensibile a tutti e ha reso tutti capaci di comprendere l’annuncio del Vangelo e di sentirlo rivolto a sé, in modo personale.
2. L’inno, le antifone, la lettura breve e la solenne benedizione finale dei vespri ci aiutano a scoprire ciò che lo Spirito Santo opera dentro la nostra persona, dentro la Chiesa, dentro l’umanità e dentro la storia. Particolarmente significativa è l’immagine del fuoco. Con la sua fiamma, lo Spirito Santo purifica interiormente e profondamente i nostri cuori e ci apre alla riconciliazione; è luce che illumina le nostre menti e ci rende capaci di accogliere con fede l’annuncio della passione, morte e risurrezione di Gesù; è fuoco che accende il nostro cuore per introdurci nella relazione di amore con Dio e nella relazione di amore con i fratelli.
3. Chiediamo, in questa Pentecoste, che lo Spirito Santo soffi con una forza particolare, ancora e di nuovo, oggi, qui nel Cenacolo, qui a Gerusalemme, come forza di purificazione, di riconciliazione, di apertura delle menti e dei cuori, di amore e di comunione. Noi vediamo e costatiamo che quando non è accolta questa azione dello Spirito sono altre forze a prevalere, quelle che conducono all’odio e alla violenza, all’incomprensione reciproca e alla divisione, alla chiusura interiore ed esteriore verso i propri fratelli.
Chiediamo con fede e con forza che lo Spirito Santo arda come fuoco di riconciliazione e di pace, di comprensione reciproca e di comunione a partire da questa Città Santa di Gerusalemme e da questa Terra Santa in cui ci sono ancora tensioni, inimicizie, odio, violenza e morte. Che il fuoco riconciliatore dello Spirito Santo raggiunga ogni angolo di questo nostro mondo ancora dilaniato da conflitti e ogni frammento di questa nostra umanità ancora divisa e bisognosa di riconciliazione e di pace.

Interiorly purified, enlightened and inflamed
1. Dear sisters and dear brothers,
The Lord give you Peace!
We have gathered in the place where the Risen Jesus appeared to his disciples the same evening of Easter Sunday. In that occasion the Risen Lord breathed on his disciples and communicated to them the gift of the Holy Spirit. Together with the Spirit he gave them peace and the ability to reconcile all persons through the forgiveness of sins.
Fifty days later, while the disciples were gathered here in prayer together with Mary, the gift of the Holy Spirit descended once again upon them, as a fulfilment of Easter. This time the gift they received made them courageous, capable of proclaiming the death and resurrection of Jesus. It rendered them capable of speaking in a way that everybody could understand the proclamation of the Gospel and to listen to it as good news proclaimed to each and every single one in a personal way.
2. The hymn, antiphons and short reading, as well as the final blessing of the Vespers help us to discover what the Holy Spirit is working within our persons, within the Church, within humanity and within history. The image of the fire is particularly significant. With his flame, the Holy Spirit purifies our hearts interiorly and profoundly and opens us to reconciliation; he is the light that enlightens our minds and makes us capable of welcoming with faith the proclamation of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus; he is the fire that inflames our heart in order to introduce us in a relationship of love with God and with the brethren.
3. In this Pentecost let us pray that the Holy Spirit will blow with a particular force, and that today, here in the Cenacle, here in Jerusalem, he will be a new power of purification, of reconciliation, of openness of minds and of hearts, of love and communion. We see and are aware that whenever this action of the Spirit is not welcomed other forces prevail, the same forces that lead to hatred and to violence, to a lack of mutual understanding and to division, to an interior and exterior closure with regards to our brothers and sisters.
Let us pray with faith and with power that the Holy Spirit will burn as a fire of reconciliation and of peace, of mutual understanding and communion, starting from this Holy City of Jerusalem and from this Holy Land in which there are still tensions, enmities, hatred, violence and death. May the reconciling fire of the Holy Spirit reach every corner of our world, which is still wounded by conflicts, and may it also reach every fragment of our divided humanity, which is still in need of reconciliation and of peace.Amen.
